"John Zappia did the impossible here tonight at the Motorplex, scaring people away from buying raffle tickets to his free passenger seat in the upcoming burnout night! With the engine boost upgraded, John wheelstanded from the line in first gear - got tyre shake - so backed off, hit second gear and produced a huge full power wheelstand that saw him drive it through and graze the concrete barrier, only to nail the throttle again and finish with an eight second pass.

His second qualifying run produced a soft 6.54/344.8km/h after having to change diffs, and rebuild the wheelie bar and right hand side of the car after those huge power wheelstands and wall grazing.
First elimination run produced another crazy drive, with John passing into Grant O'Rourke's lane and nearly touching the Torana before shutting off. This last run in Zap's Rat was the ideal opportunity for John Zappia to fulfill an 18 year wish - to drive the car back down the return road in front of all the fans - so he did!" The Zap's Rat Monaro has been recommissioned for AA/AP Competition Eliminator class racing for the 2001 drag racing season, using a Keith Black 511 single magneto setup. John Zappia aims to win Top Comp this year, with a 6.40 as a goal.

John Zappia has plans for a re-entry into Top Doorslammer in the 2001/2002 season, with a new car in the planning stage. Zap's Rat IV will be an Anderson chassis car, using the current KB 511 from Zap's Rat I.
