Gary Phillips reigning Australian Top Doorslammer Champion out for his first qualifying session alongside him the awesome power of Aaron Lynch, Lynch in for a big burnout, Gary a little more sedate in his procedure, Lynch’s car has snuffed it in the burnout and the crew are pushing it back, Phillips Stude sounding really strong.  Oww and it’s a hard leave for Gary on and off the throttle towards the centre line and a big march at the top end. The Exon Valdeze would have been proud of the oil slick left by Aaron Lynch.

Hmm Fabietti out of shape in the water, crosses the centre line twice, hmmm will this run count?  Steve Stanic in the lane beside him…very strong in the burnout, he is waiting patiently for Fabietti to return. Nice leave and straight pass by Stanic, not a great pass for Fabietti he was sluggish and not happy on that pass- and it headed left pretty early got it back in and crossed the centre line at the finish line . And that run does not count for a couple of reasons.

Another little hold up and now we are back to qualifying with Kym Petterwood  - making a very welcome competition return here in Top Doorslammer, the Bat Mobile burns on down alongside him, its being a big break for Petterwood, he was a very popular racer back in the day.  Into stage, both cars building in the revs, Petterwood is out early on the tree and a little shaking around on the run but a good pass, Kapiris is on a good strong pass and a great first qualifier for him.

Stuart Bishop and the WA hero Robin Judd, Bishop ran the highest speed in Australia by a doorslammer at the recent WSID meeting, he maybe a real threat here this weekend.  Judd already with 60 points under his belt, what can they come up with now.  Judd into full stage, both are out and its ugly in both lanes, Bishop in trouble soon as he left the start line, and he had the shakes and shutters right through the entire quarter, Judd peddles to straighten up and make it through unscathed and he crosses the finish line first.

And it’s a very very sedate burnout by Kath Stevens, Ben Bray gets stuck into it a bit more.  Kath missed the start of the season in Sydney as Brett had taken the car and Ben has not had a good start to the season, Bray is out like a bullet and its going and going for a fantastic top qualifying pass at this stage, Stevens into trouble right off the line – could have problems with the clutch, and backs it out and just takes a leisurely pass down the quarter.

Victor Bray and Steve Packman – the second of Brett Stevens team, Packman was one of the 10 non qualifiers in Sydney, can Victor crack the five second barrier here this weekend, the big heavy beast is sure looking for it, its on a good pass but Victor shuts it off early for a slowing 6.60 pass.  Packman right off the line once again ill handling and backs it off.

John Zappia fresh from his big win at Sydney is on the track and pleasing the crowd with his awesome burnout procedure, its not as quick off the start line as we expected but it is a good pass and pops into second position but don’t forget another three qualifying sessions to come.

The Boss is torturing those tyres in the burnout, the car has been repaired since his mishap at Darwin, he’s got it soft on the start line, and a nice pass – straight pass, a little sedate but good enough for third spot.

Steve Stanic and Stuart Bishop on the track right now, its 123 degrees on track, so do they have the right clutch settings for these hotter than hot conditions, two beautiful Camaros, suffering massive tyre shake on both sides of the track, but Bishop powers it on through after all the black tracking off the line, he needed to get into the field, Stanic backed it off he was already in the field and opted to save the car.

Brett Stevens and Steve Packman.  Packman not yet in the field, Stevens already in the field with this brand new doorslammer after the wall smacking incident in Darwin, Packy needs to step it up to get into this very competitive field.  Packy is out and on a good one, the Boss is very untidy off the start line very violent off the line, and it was a burse panel out for Packman but he still comes into number five, leaving Bishop on the bump spot for now…but just wait until tonight.

Robin Judd and Fabulous Fabietti…Fabietti still to make the field, both are taking it to the crowd with the burnout routine, Robin Judd not feeling comfortable in the seventh position, and a big peddle from Fabietti as he gets close to the centre line but drives it on through, it’s a first pass the finish line pass for Judd, but he does not improve and Fabietti has pushed him to the bump spot.

Kath Stevens and Kym Petterwood, both wanting to get into this very tough field,  both competitors suffered tyre shake last night, and hope they have it sorted.  Kath Stevens is out and its looking good but only puts her in ninth position as she backs off way early, she droves through the shake.  Petterwood tyre shakes – on and off the throttle and then the blower belt lets go.

Aaron Lynch, need we say that he is looking for a much better qualifier than last night as a oil line came loose and oiled down his whole lane, Ben Bray in the lane beside him running the same tune up as Victor was running in Sydney is wanting to consolidate his top qualifying position.  Bray is out hard and his door comes slightly open at around 300 feet and the car got fairly untidy about then.  Lynch is on a great pass and moves straight into the field.

Peter Kapiris and Victor Bray, no Bray has been back at the Tomato Farm last night rebuilding the engine, Vic has been shuffled back to twelfth spot and a lot of pressure on the team to break into the field, Kapiris is in the bottom half of the field, and wants to move up into the top half, but the fire has gone out in Bray’s car after such a big night of work with a fuel nozzle coming off and not being able to repair it on the start line, Kapiris will take the solo.  And it’s a good pass through the second half of the track after a sedate but good leave.

Our last competitor for this qualifying session will be John Zappia, now we are quite concerned that Gary Phillips has not come out for this session as he has not yet qualified. And we all know that Zap is out looking for that Top Qualifiers Trophy – oh and it’s a very untidy leave for Zap as he suffers sever tyre shake, heads towards the centre line and is off the peddle.

Gary Phillips has not qualified for this bracket here this weekend so far, so we expect he will be throwing everything at it, Steve Stanic in the Lucky Belleri Camaro into stage, Phillips comes in, Stanic is out, Phillips has tyre shake and is loose, something comes off the car and its not a great pass for Gary he is not in the field.  Stanic stays in third despite this awesome run even though the wheelie bar banged its way down the track stopping the car from launching.

Bishop now, Fabietti beside him, good burnouts, but Fabietti’s fire goes out after the burnout and it’s a solo for Bishop.  Bishop has run the fastest pass by a Top Doorslammer in Sydney can he do it now and he slams the Wallace Bishop Jewellers car into second spot with 246 mile an hour.

Big sideways burnout for Kath Stevens, Aaron Lynch a little smoother in the burnout procedure, can Kath smash her way into the field, oh and there is massive tyre shake from Kath as she leaves the line, she opts to abort instead of driving through it, Lynch is out on a good pass with another 240 mile an hour pass.

Victor Bray needs to put down a barn stormer of a run here this afternoon, he is yet to qualify, Robin Judd is now out and both need to put down 6.1 passes to get into this very very tough field, something exits Brays car prior to the finish line after severe tyre shake and neither of these cars have made it into this field and there is just a last shot qualifier left here today.

Two non qualifiers coming forward for this last session of Top Doorslammer, both Judd and Phillips will be throwing everything at it to get into this field.  The humidity is starting to climb very quickly, it would be shattering for Gary to be a non qualifier as he is the defending Australian Champion, the revs are up, Phillips is shaking hard, his door opens, but he holds on and slams himself into the field, this is officially now the quickest Top Doorslammer field in the country.  Robin Judd faces real disappointment and will not be in the field.

Maurice Fabietti another non qualifier makes his way forward torturing the tyres, in beside him Peter Kapiris, the crowd is loving this…Fab is loose and looking at the wall, he peddles it but straightens up, Kapiris is burning it up, its lean and he has cooked it.  Kind of looked like burnt pistons and the track walkers are taking a stroll down Kapiris’s lane but no oil.  Fabietti will not make the field for this the 42nd Nationals.

Kath Stevens very sedate in the burnout again, it’s a nice one for Lynch, can he snatch the top qualifiers position, Stevens studders off the start line – straightens it up and slows it down.  Lynch had a massive peddle on and off the throttle three times and still runs a good number but leaves him in fifth position.

Stuart Bishop another competitor looking for top position and the mile an hour record here this evening, Kym Petterwood looking for a personal best to make it into the field, this will be awesome, they are out and Bishop is sideways with the right hand wheel off the ground, but Petterwood is on fire, he has banged the blower as the fire builds, parts fly off everywhere, and he ends up in front of Bishop with another explosion as he veers off the track.

Bray versus Bray, young Ben is in…Number one position no less, Victor sitting in 13th position, wanting to qualify, Victor will throw everything at this pass without a doubt, and Victor is out first, but Ben is shooting on past, it’s a good pass on both sides of the bitumen, Victor comes into seventh spot.  And Ben shows the world that this is one consistent six second Monaro nudging the door of a five this weekend.

This is going to be ohhh so dramatic for two reasons, Brett Stevens is trying to get his way back into the field, in the other lane John Zappia he wants  the top position, he wants a five, he wants it all.  Hang on to your seats, this looks good for Zappia, Stevens has the short time but does not break into the field after he goes into tyre spin and the car seems to lose power, this is a real upset for the BSR team.  Zappia does not take that top spot, a crushing blow for the Western Australian team. And it is official we have the Quickest Top Doorslammer field in Australian history.

Only Packman can make a difference to this event, by qualifying right now and pushing Phillips out, and keeping at least one of the BSR team in the event.  Stevens made a very quick trip back down the front to line Packman up straight and he overpowers the race track blazing the tyres and the field is set for an absolute nail biting first round.

Aaron Lynch and Steve Stanic burn out across the start line in the quickest Top Doorslammer field in Australian Drag Racing history, this bracket has been fought like Gladiators in the Coliseum, small wholeshot from Stanic.  Lynch has to drive it all the way as he was using up the lane but can’t pull Stanic back in.  Stanic will progress to the next round.

Victor Bray and John Zappia and this match up is worth the admission price alone, these two competitors have been battling it out against each other for more than 20 years, from the old Wildbunch days till now, the start line is going to play the important part in this race, Zappia is out, only five hundredths of a second separate these two at the finish line, despite Zappia had severe tyre shake right off the line until he could pull it around.

Ben Bray our top qualifier, going up against our eighth qualifier and defending Australian Champion Gary Phillips, Gary has been concentrating on his beautiful new Lucas Top Alcohol Funny Car this weekend, there is a burndown on the lights, Bray goes into instant tyre shake – enough to open the door, and has to button off, Phillips has an untidy leave but still manages to put Bray back into the pits.

John Zappia and Stuart Bishop, we would like to see Stuart Bishop take the win here to keep one Queenslander in the final, here at Willowbank Queenslanders usually dominate this field, but it has not been that way this weekend.

Revs are up both sides of the track, Zappia has the wholeshot, Bishop has problems, Zappia is on a mission from God and takes the win demandingly.  Bishop not that much slower but the wholeshot of Zaps won the race.

Steven Stanic this is the place he needs to be to be able to put in some form of chase for the points in the Australian Championship as he did not qualify in the first round, alongside him a favourite of the crowd here at Willowbank – John Zappia.  Zap is looking for low e.t. points which Ben Bray still has a choke hold on, Stanic is going to try and pull something out of the bag, they are both out, Stanic is keeping right up there with him and Zappia has a massive supercharger explosion right there on the line, but Stanic had already won the race with some great driving.
