John Zappia finished equal second in elapsed time at the quickest Top Doorslammer field in Australia’s history at the Summernations last night with a 6.052et @ 235.83mph. Fellow West Australian Robin Judd managed to go 239.57mph to slip into second place with his 6.052et pass.
“ANDRA Top Doorslammer racing is getting very exciting in this country at the moment, with an amazingly tough field this weekend” said Zap, “We expected to go a little quicker, but are happy with our position and the tuning potential for tonight.”
The Striker Monaro ran a 6.090et @ 233.20mph in the first session, but needed an engine change after a connecting rod snapped in half after Zap got off the throttle.
“The run felt good and I did not even know the engine had gone bang, until I got out of the car and saw oil pouring out. I guess we are right on the limit with these 3,000 horsepower Hemi engines, because we rev them to 10,000rpm with over 40 pounds boost.”
The Zappia Racing crew was able to slip in a spare TFX engine from the spares pool and was out for round two just in time. A safe tune to set the baseline resulted in a 6.095et @ 232.31mph pass.
“We trimmed up the tune a little for the third qualifier and a 6.052et @ 235.83mph pass put us equal second. Our speed is a little down this meeting, so we missed out on second qualifier position. Congratulations to Deno Brijeski for joining myself and Aaron Lynch in the five second club”.
