A B Final win for Zap's Rat over the Top Alcohol Funny Car of Damien Harris topped of a great day of racing at the Kwinana Motorplex in Perth for the RENTCO Top Doorslammer as the Zappia Racing Team prepare for Round 6 of the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship at Willowbank in two weeks. The local Top Comp bracket is run on calculated index handicaps based on performances so far in the season, and a three round format with A and B finals.
"Today was good for the team and for our sponsors, including new Major Sponsors - Striker Crushing Equipment - who recently signed up for the remainder of this season, and the full 2006/2007 season ahead. We bent a valve during the qualifying 6.138 run, so it gave the crew an excellent chance to practice pulling the blower and head off and replace the valve between rounds." a smiling Zap said afterwards.
"The second run of 6.068et @ 235.60mph was better, even with a soft tune, running 0.182 under our 6.25 index, but not enough to get into the A Final. We got excited after that, and with nothing to loose we turned up the wick to try and run a five for the local crowd."
"The Final run felt very strong in the car, hitting all the right revs and pulling hard, but a 6.085et @ 236.22mph result was slower due to turning the tyres during the run. The track could not hold that level of performance on the night for us, but the win was satisfying."
The win takes Zap to third place in the 2005/2006 Sprintex Superchargers Top Comp Championship with 555 points behind Morrison on 605 points, and McSweeney on 690 points. The team head off across the huge Australian continent on the weekend to Willowbank International Raceway in sunny Queensland (the equivilent of travelling from LA California to New York City, New York!) to compete in the Tin Tops event.
"We had not planned on competing at the Tin Tops, as it's only a one day event with no television coverage, so it makes it a long but essential trip in our 2005/2006 Championship chase after dissapointing results in our last two performances at WSID and Kwinana. Anybody that thinks Top Doorslammer is an easy bracket to run should spend time in any team's workshop in the weeks prior to an event. Friday night at around midnight we found our new heads did not fit, so we worked right through until 6am Saturday to get the job done."
"The ongoing financial support of our sponsors, firstly our naming rights sponsor, and other sponsors that have joined the team since the World Record run, has been an integral part of our success this season. Maintaining a successful team takes hard work and long hours in the shed, fine tuning and adding all the one percenters together to make a complete winning package."
"The continued support of our sponsors will enable us to continue our assault of the Doorslammer Championship this season and enable planning for next season".
